OHIO LAW
Notice to O.O. McIntyre Park District Volunteers
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with O.O. McIntyre Park District . Volunteers provide an important role in the programs of the Park District and your contributions are valued and appreciated.
This sheet is to share information and requirements about a new law passed in the State of Ohio. On March 22, 2001, Governor Bob Taft signed into law Senate Bill 187, which outlines new requirements for adult volunteers who regularly interact with children. The law seeks to protect children by establishing a mechanism to conduct criminal background checks on volunteers who regularly have “unsupervised” access to children. This is the same type of background check that currently is required by teachers, day-care workers and school bus drivers.
As an organization that provides services to youth and that utilizes volunteers, O.O. McIntyre Park District will implement this legislative change. In addition, the law requires that O.O. McIntyre Park District notify all volunteers within the organization about this important change.
Many children take advantage of O.O. McIntyre Park District programs therefore, part of your activities may require you to have unsupervised access to children during the course of your volunteer work. O.O. McIntyre Park District will conduct fingerprinting and a criminal background investigation of all volunteers who will have regular unsupervised access to children (as determined in the volunteer position description); additionally, O.O. McIntyre Park District may follow the same procedures for volunteers with any access to children whether supervised or unsupervised.
The Park District’s objective is to provide quality learning experiences within a safe environment for all participants. These activities are made possible because of dedicated volunteers like yourself. Below is a list of offenses in conjunction with Senate Bill 187, which O.O. McIntyre Park District uses to determine disqualification of a candidate.
